Home Security Tips

Is your home security good enough?

Home security is a personal responsibility and home security is something you should think about when buying your house. You consider the neighborhood because you want to live in a safe and secure neighborhood but few people consider home security beyond that when buying a house.

Most new home owners don't think much about security until they move into the house. Most loans require the house to be insured and that covers you if someone gets hurt on your property or something gets stolen but it is not home security. Your home owners insurance generally comes into effect after you've been robbed, not before. Home owners insurance is not security against being robbed or hurt in your own home.

Apart from giving us shelter our home is also where most of our valuables as well as our important private papers are kept. Even more important and valuable are our families and children. Keeping your family safe is the most important aspect of home security. Cars, boats, TVs, computers and things can all be replaced but your family is a different story.

Because everyone wants to keep their possessions and family safe home security is becoming more of a concern than ever before. There are many security measures a homeowner can take. You don't need an expert to take care of the things that will make your home more secure. A lot of the security measures you can take are just common sense and cost little to implement or install and most can be done by the home owner without costly professional help.

Follow some of these tips to improve your overall home security and reduce you and your family's chances of being burglarized or victimized. Go out and take a walk around the outside of your house and see where you can make improvements.

Burglars can enter your home in any number of ways. Most of them simply enter through the front door, but first floor windows, back doors, storage areas, and second floor windows are also likely points of entry.

Do you have large bushes growing around the house? Are they near or under windows? The large bushes provide hiding places and cover for burglars and thieves and you need to trim them back so they aren't helping criminals gain access to your house. Your landscaping shouldn't provide help or cover for burglars.

Most homeowners don't think of the second story of their house as being vulnerable but it is. Are there trees or branches bad guys could climb to get into the second story of your house? Are there drain pipes or trellises that can be climbed? How about access to a second story deck?

If so trim the branches back or even have the tree cut down. You can also move the downspouts to an area where they don't compromise security. While a trellis may be pretty, if it's in the wrong place it really should be moved or taken down. The more things you can do to make getting into your house harder the better chance you have of staying safe and secure in your home.

Is your garage connected to your house? How does your garage door open? Do you have a remote control for the garage door? The remote may open and shut your garage door but if it's the old style with a single frequency you are vulnerable to anyone with the same kind of remote being able to open your garage door.

Thieves can just drive down the street and look for garage doors that open with their remote and then they have access to your whole house and when they shut the door no one can see them. Not good. Consider getting a remote system with rolling code changes to help ensure no on else can open your garage door.

You may want to go out and walk around the house after dark and see where some outdoor lighting could make your home more secure. Criminals don't like light and the better lighting you have on possible entry points the safer and more secure your family will be. You can now buy solar powered lights that will help protect your home at a small cost. Put them where you need them.

You can also consider motion sensing lights that will go on automatically if someone is prowling around. Of course the cost is a bit higher because they need to be connected to an electrical source but motion sensing lights will alert you when they come on and you can call the police and have them investigate.

While your outside take a look at your doors and entries to the house. Do you have good doors and locks or do they need to be replaced. Consider installing steel doors with a good dead bolt locking system. A lot of older doors and locks were installed so they can be opened with a good kick. If that's the case you really need to replace them. All entrances need to have good doors and locks that will keep you and your family safe and secure.

Consider putting up a small sign that your house is protected by burglar alarms or a monitoring company. Even if it isn't thieves will think twice because they don't want to risk getting caught. For them the problem is they can't verify whether your house is protected or not until they try to break in and that makes it not worth the risk. A fake security camera can have the same effect.

Home security is no longer something available only to those who own million dollar mansions built on sprawling estates. Thanks to recent advances in technology, the average homeowner can now fully protect the family with home security systems that incorporate security cameras, fire alarms, burglar alarms and other home security surveillance systems including medical alert systems.

The security of your home and the safety of your loved ones is your responsibility. Do everything you can to keep your home and family secure. While it may cost a little your family is worth it and your home security should be one of your highest priorities for that reason.
