Keep Home Security in Mind When Leaving Your Home Unattended

By Craig R Cole

It is a fact that most burglaries or break-ins occur when we are not at home, thieves are opportunists and will often spend hours or days scoping out a potential target to get an idea of when their victim is not at home. There are many features of the modern home that should be present in your home also to ensure that your house doesn’t become an easy target.

Modern uPVC windows and doors are considered to be the most secure for your home as they are made from incredibly durable and resilient material; they are also made using multi-point locking systems so they cannot be booted in easily. The class in the door and windows is also more resistant to breaking and will not shatter easily to make an entrance for the thief.

You should of course keep all valuables away from doors or windows and out of sight from any passerby too, if the thief can’t see anything of value from the window then there’s a good chance they may pass by rather than break in, look around and risk getting caught. Keep your curtains or blinds shut and consider leaving one light and a radio on if you go out at night so that it looks and sounds like someone is home.

You should have some form of burglar alarm activated at night in your home and for when you are away too. A good quality burglar alarm will detect movement in key areas where you have placed sensors, there are even models that are able to distinguish the difference between a burglar and your cat going for a late night stroll round the living room.

You should consider placing sensors inside your garage if you keep expensive tools, golf clubs or even your car in your garage. Some burglar alarms are even sophisticated enough to contact a central monitoring service who can send the police or even call a relative or friend to tell them that the alarm has gone off. This can help situations where you are off on holiday and your alarm is going off keeping your neighbours awake.

Having exterior lights that react to movement is a good security measure as well; some even come with a chime that rings inside if the sensor is tripped. If you get a lot of animals in your garden frequently setting the light off you may want to turn the chime off but one thing to note about exterior lights is keeping clotheslines or garden tools hidden as some thieves may try to break the light so they can continue undetected.

Make sure you choose cheap double glazing with uPVC frames to keep burglars out and have house alarms to deter them from trying to steal anything from your house.
